In Ihanji in the Misungwi district of Tanzania, a new irrigation project is empowering smallholder farmers through sustainable technology and practical training.

As part of our project to promote climate-resilient agriculture, the first solar-powered irrigation systems have been successfully installed in Ihanji. The aim is to improve access to reliable and sustainable water management and to increase the agricultural productivity of smallholder farms in the long term.

In close cooperation with our local partner Rudia Tanzania, we are implementing local measures to strengthen resilience to climate change and impart knowledge through practical training.

Currently, three hectares of land have been prepared and planted with watermelons, among other things. The installed solar pump irrigates the areas reliably. In addition, a demonstration field has been set up as part of a Farmer Field School (FFS) to provide practical training for local farmers.

We would like to thank Rudia Tanzania and all those involved for their great commitment. Further irrigation systems in Kasulu and other parts of Misungwi District are already being planned.
